Although Germany has promised to phase out coal by 2038, extraction continues and the future of several villages hangs in the balance. Combining Alan Gignoux’s photographs of abandoned houses and Chloe Juno’s images of the personal belongings left behind by departing families, Monuments documents and commemorates communities in North-Rhine Westphalia earmarked for demolition.

The two photographers take different approaches to highlighting the erasure of shared history and collective memory. Gignoux’s images document the destruction of houses, gardens, schools, shops, churches, businesses, roads, the infrastructure of entire communities, while Juno’s photographs show us personal objects that recall individual lives.

Designed by Chloe Juno and Emily Macaulay, the spiral-bound book features Gignoux’s landscape photographs presented as generous spreads with Juno’s objects photographs overlaid as inserts of varying sizes. Edition of 150 published by Gignouxphotos

BIO

Chloe Juno is a documentary photographer, curator, visual storyteller and photobook maker whose practice explores contemporary life through the overlooked objects people leave behind. For over ten years she has developed Someone's Rubbish, an ongoing photographic archive of discarded objects found across Brighton & Hove. The project has been exhibited at Cluster Photography London and featured in national and international publications including Metro and Rolling Stone Magazine. Her photobook collaboration ‘MONUMENTS’ extends this exploration, documenting discarded objects within towns demolished to make way for coal mines in Germany the objects actings as quiet markers of people,memory, place and social change. ‘MONUMENTS’ is held in the Artphilein Foundation and Protest in Photobook collections, reflecting Juno's ongoing commitment to transforming everyday objects into compelling visual narratives of our time.
